Son of a Bricklayer - Shades of Grey

Genre: Hip Hop, Experimental

Son of a Bricklayer is a Copenhagen-based hip hop producer with a difference. For one thing, his music is instrumental. That’s right, no lyrics and no rapping. Another difference is the fact that it is rather dark as far as hip hop goes.

Sounding almost jazzy at times, most of the tracks sound bleak and dark, but relaxing also. As a consequence, the album artwork is also dark and dirty, you get the idea.

Tracks of note include Litarefni, Bloom, Off and La Chambre.

Atmosphere - Strictly Leakage

Genre: Hip Hop

A hip hop duo, rapper Slug and DJ/producer Ant have decided to release one of their albums, Strictly Leakage as a free download from the independant label Rhymesayers.

What I enjoy about this group is the fact that the hip hop places emphasis on the music as well as the lyrics. Most of the songs are very funky, using a lot of brass instruments.

Tracks of note include Little Math You, The Things That Hate Us and That’s Not Beef, That’s Pork.

The album may be downloaded from here as 192kbps mp3s.

Tom Caruana - Welcome Aboard

Genre: Hip Hop

This artist is somehow connected to Malta. Visit this page for more information.

A flurry of different hip hop styles invade the listener, along with samples from unknown films and records, giving this album both a dated feel and an urban feel. However, Tom Caruana’s style of hip hop is very reminiscent of britpop or indie music.

Also, as a side note, Tom Caruana happens to have a Maltese surname, even though he is British.

This album may be downloaded from here at the bitrate of 320kps MP3.
