Il Maniscalco Maldestro - Il Maniscalco Maldestro

Genre: Rock: Experimental

Il Maniscalco Maldestro are an Italian band with hints of experimental rock, folk, jazz and punk. There’s a lot of experimentation in their tracks; however this is not taken to extremes, making for some different listening.

One of my favourite elements of the band is the singer. Although he whispers a bit too much during the songs, his uses different techniques often enough to make his voice interesting.

Tracks of note include Metamorforsi Plausibile, L’Età del Bisturi and Silenzio di Cartapesta.

The album may be downloaded from Jamendo from here.

Marc Galea - My Journey

Genre: rock: instrumental

This release is by a local artist. Visit this page for more information.

Marc Galea, one of the guitar teachers at Ministry of Music in Birkarkara, has released an EP entitled My Journey , which is a compilation of some of his older recordings. In essence, it is instrumental rock, with 3 original songs and 1 rendition of Jimi Hendrix’ Voodoo Chile.

Tracks of note include Dusty Sunbeam and Still Alive.

The EP may be downloaded from Marc Galea’s official site here.

Andrew Osenga - 2 Albums

Genre: Pop: Pop Rock, Acoustic

Andrew Osenga has recently become one of my favourite acoustic artists. Apart from the 2 free EPs being reviewed here, he has 3 albums under his own name and 5 other albums under 2 different names.

Anyways, back to reviewing the free stuff. First up is Letters to the Editor, Vol. 1. Six simple songs that make you want to listen to the EP again and again. Osenga also uses multilayering, featuring a chorus of his own vocals. Tracks of note include Swing Wide the Glimmering Gates, my particular favourite, and Wanted.

Letters to the Editor, Vol. 2 features more of the same brilliant work I’ve come to expect from Osenga. Must-listen tracks include Secret Country, Four Horses and Good Things Always Are.

The albums may be downloaded from Andrew Osenga’s official site from the links below.

Nikmis - 2 Albums

Genre: Electronic, Classical

A mixture of classical and electronic music?

Well, not exactly.

Nikmis plays electronic music with a tinge of Baroque and Classical music. Light-hearted music, it is excellent music when you’re in the mood for something sophisticated, but yet, modern sounding. His first album, Eine Kleine Nekopanmusik has a somewhat strange affinity to the Nekopan. Tracks of note include Metter and Fork.

Nikmis has also recently released a second album, entitled Nikmis and the Mystery of the Blue-Blooded Wendigo, again having nothing to do with an actual wendigo. Instead, a giant mushroom is depicted on the album cover. Confused? Me too. The music is still top notch, tracks of note on this album being Sore and Numo.

The albums may be downloaded from the Spoomusic Netlabel from the links below.

Talco - 2 Albums

Genre: Ska: Ska Punk

Talco are an Italian ska punk band offering 2 free albums from Jamendo. The first album, Combat Circus, offers an incredible selection of ska punk that will keep you on your feet. All lyrics are in Italian, which I unfortunately do not understand.

Must-listen tracks include Tortuga, La Carovana and Diari Perduti.

They also have another album by the name of Tutti Assoluti. This album is sounds tighter and much more intense than before.

Both albums can be downloaded from Jamendo by following the links below.
